The Moment I Wake Up!
The start of the day has a lot of power. How we choose to begin does not necessarily make or break the entire day, but it certainly can help or hurt it. In today’s post, I want to share a few morning routine practices that I love and that help me begin my day feeling grounded, prepared, and at peace.
First, upon waking up, I try my hardest not to immediately reach for my phone. This is definitely easier said than done, so I try to remove some of the temptation by programming my phone to limit what I can access first thing in the morning. I have found that when I begin my day by instantly scrolling, checking notifications, or looking at everything I need to respond to, I can become distracted before I have even gotten out of bed.
Instead, I usually get up and go straight to my swivel chair to read and journal. My morning reading is centered around my desire to sit with and learn more about my Savior, Jesus. I reach for whatever book of the Bible, devotional, or study I am walking through at that time and allow myself to be still for a little while.
This is the most crucial part of my morning because I believe the Lord uses this time to give me the guidance and perspective I need to walk through my day. There is something so refreshing about the stillness of the morning before everything gets busy. It gives me a chance to slow down, pray, reflect, and remember what is actually important before the demands of the day begin.
Next, I take my morning vitamins, medicines, and probiotics. This is a simple part of my routine, but having it built into my mornings helps me stay consistent. I have learned that small habits are often much easier to maintain when they are connected to something you already do every single day.
After that, I like to really take my time making breakfast and sitting down to eat. I try not to treat breakfast as something I have to rush through on my way out the door. Instead, I like having a few minutes to make something I enjoy, sit down, and mentally prepare for everything I am about to do that day.
While I eat, I usually think through my schedule, what classes or responsibilities I have, and anything I need to remember. Sometimes I will look over my planner or mentally organize the most important things I want to accomplish. I have found that this makes the day feel much less overwhelming because I am not walking into it completely unprepared.
Of course, every morning does not look exactly the same. Some mornings are slower, while others involve waking up late, rushing out the door, or realizing I forgot something five minutes before I have to leave. I definitely do not follow my routine perfectly every day.
For me, a good morning is less about having the perfect routine and more about creating a little space before the busyness begins. Spending time with the Lord, taking care of myself, eating a good breakfast, and thinking through my day helps me feel more present and prepared.
If you are trying to create a morning routine of your own, I would start small. Pick one or two things that make you feel peaceful, energized, or prepared and build from there. Your morning does not have to be elaborate to be meaningful. Sometimes, the little things really are what make life better.

Different Strokes for Different Folks!
I also think morning routines are very much a “different strokes for different folks” kind of thing. What makes me feel peaceful and prepared may not work for someone else at all. Some people love getting up and immediately working out, some need coffee before they can even think, and others may need a little extra sleep more than they need a long morning routine. The goal is not to copy someone else’s routine perfectly, but to figure out what helps you personally start your day in a way that feels healthy and intentional.
Morning Joe!
There is nothing better than a fresh pot of coffee first thing in the morning! Or in the afternoon. Or the evening. Or really anytime you need a little pick-me-up. I love coffee.
Funny enough, I was not always a huge coffee fan. One day, though, I decided that I wanted to become a coffee lover — but not just a lover of sugary coffee drinks. I wanted to like the real thing: black coffee. So, every morning during my sophomore year of high school, I would sit down and drink black coffee with my parents. At first, I definitely had to get used to it, but over time I started to genuinely enjoy it. The rest is history.
That being said, I am not crazy. I still love a fun coffee drink too. Give me a good latte, seasonal flavor, or fun coffee shop special and I am all in.
To me, coffee is such a small part of the day that can add so much to it. It is more than just a drink — it can be an entire experience. Maybe it is a fresh pot of coffee in the morning that makes the kitchen smell like ambition — Dolly Parton reference intended. Maybe it is trying a fun new latte with a new friend, or sitting across from an old friend or family member during one of those long conversations that somehow lasts for hours.
Coffee has found its way into so many little moments in my life. Some of my best conversations have happened over a cup of coffee. Some of my favorite quiet moments alone have included a mug in my hand. It has even been part of some of my favorite spontaneous adventures, whether that means stopping at a new coffee shop, grabbing something for the road, or simply having a reason to sit down and stay awhile.
I think that is part of why I love it so much. Coffee can be comforting, social, energizing, familiar, or adventurous depending on the day. It gives you an excuse to slow down, catch up with someone, or simply enjoy a few peaceful minutes by yourself.
So, if you are not already a coffee person, consider this your sign. Start small, try something new, find a drink you love, and see where it takes you. Do yourself a favor and become a coffee connoisseur. Your mornings — and maybe your afternoons and evenings too — just might be better for it.
Meet Me Outside!
One of my favorite hobbies is also one of the simplest: going on long walks. I love how a walk can be whatever I need it to be that day.
Sometimes I go with friends and use the time to catch up and talk about life. Other times, I walk by myself while calling an old friend or someone in my family. I also love putting on music and seeing how long I can keep going while pushing my endurance a little more each time.
What I probably love most, though, is the time to think. Walking gives me space to reflect, pray, process life, and step away from everything else for a while. There is something about being outside that makes me feel more present and refreshed.
For me, walking is more than exercise. It is time with people I love, time with myself, and a reminder to slow down and enjoy being outside. Sometimes a little fresh air really can change the whole day.
Listen to the Music!
I have always loved how music can make an ordinary moment feel more special. A drive, a walk, getting ready with friends, or even cleaning your room can feel completely different when the right song is playing.
One of my favorite things is discovering new music. There is something so fun about finding a song you instantly love and then wanting everyone else to hear it too. I am constantly saving songs, making playlists, and organizing music for different moods, seasons, trips, and people.
Some playlists are just for fun, while others become attached to specific memories. I love making playlists for friends or sending someone a song because it reminds me of them. Music has a way of creating connection without needing a big explanation. Sometimes one song can remind you of a certain person, place, or season of life almost instantly.
I also love how personal music can be. A song might mean one thing to me and something completely different to someone else, but sharing it can still create this little point of connection between us.
For me, music is more than background noise. It adds personality to everyday life and gives moments something extra. Whether I am finding a new favorite song, making yet another playlist, or sharing music with someone I love, I think life is just a little better with a soundtrack.
Putting Pen to Paper!
Journaling is one of those habits that can look different depending on the day. Sometimes I have a lot to say, and other times I only write a few sentences. Either way, I love having a place to slow down and put my thoughts somewhere outside of my own head.
A lot of the time, journaling helps me process what is going on in my life. I can write about something I am excited about, something I am worried about, a prayer I have been thinking through, or even something completely random. There is something about writing things down that makes everything feel a little clearer.
I also love being able to look back at old journal entries. It is such a reminder of how much can change over time. Things that once felt huge may not feel as heavy anymore, and prayers I wrote down months ago may look completely different when I read them again. It gives me a chance to notice growth that I probably would have missed otherwise.
For me, journaling is not about having perfect handwriting or filling a certain number of pages. It is simply about making time to reflect, be honest, and slow down for a few minutes.
Sometimes all you need is a pen, a blank page, and a little time to think.
Home is in the details!
I love a space with personality. I think we all have different ideas of what comfort and peace look and feel like in a home, which is why there really is no right or wrong way to decorate. The little details should simply be whatever makes you feel most at home.
You can work so hard to create a space that is “trendy,” but if that style does not really fit your personality, it can feel like a missed opportunity. Home should be a place where you can relax, feel comfortable, and be surrounded by things that make you happy.
I am definitely no expert on design, but I know what I love. For me, that means antiques, lots of color, accent lighting, and decorations that have some kind of meaning behind them. I love when a room feels collected over time instead of like everything was bought all at once.
One of my absolute favorite things to do is create little nooks and corners. In the corner of my room by my bed, I have a collection of thrifted antique paintings from an antique store in my hometown. They are all different shapes and sizes, and most of them are oil paintings. Some of the pieces even remind me of home, which makes them feel extra special while I am away at college.
I also have a floor lamp and sconces in that corner, which make the space feel warm and cozy at night. It is a small part of my room, but it is probably one of my favorite places because it feels so personal to me.
At the end of the day, decorating is not about following every trend or making a space look perfect. It is about creating an environment that feels like you. The colors, lighting, memories, and little details are what can turn a room into a place where you can truly relax and feel at home.
Most Important Meal of the Day!
Breakfast is one of my favorite parts of the day. Mine usually starts with a scoop of prebiotic yogurt, followed by brewing my morning pot of coffee. Then I make two sunny-side-up eggs, preferably jammy, while my toast is going. Once everything is ready, I grab some fruit from the fridge and finally sit down to enjoy it.
While I eat, I usually get greeted by my roommates and we have a little morning conversation before everyone heads off in different directions. Then, usually toward the end of breakfast, I pour my coffee and add a little milk and maple syrup. It is such a simple routine, but it has become something I really look forward to.
Breakfast is important because our bodies need food and energy to start the day, but I think I love it just as much for the experience. It gives me a chance to take my morning slowly, wake up, spend a little time with my roommates, and mentally prepare for what is ahead.
There is something peaceful about not immediately rushing into the day. Even if I have a busy schedule, breakfast gives me a few quiet minutes to sit, think, and set my intentions before everything starts moving.
For me, breakfast is more than just a meal. It is a small part of the day that helps me feel grounded, connected, and ready for whatever comes next.
